In 1979 Citadel started as a three-piece with the release Silence of Surrender on the QFM Project LP and live simul-cast Agora Concerts. Concerts, videos and album releases followed, as well as their pioneering of a cable variety show (VVTV) and a 3 year tenure as a band-in-residence for The Recording Workshop. After migrating to Hollywood, the band continued to record and perform. In 1990 their CD, The Citadel of Cynosure and Other Tales was chosen as Best of KLOS Local Licks in Los Angeles and hit the top of many radio playlists, from the US to France, Russia to Germany, Japan to Spain, Hollywood to Mailbu with hits like Dungeons of War, Stygian Barque and Winter’s Dying.
Live Citadel Shows and Concerts released on DVD from Ohio to California include The Agora (Newport), Legend Valley, Madame Wongs, Gazzarris, The Troubadour, Roxy, Gilleys Charlie Horse and UCLAs Royce Hall. This self-signed band also originated and co-produced the first ProgFest at Royce - and this single event spearheaded a resurgence of progressive music, birthing countless similar festivals across the globe that continue to this day!
Although (we're) not intentionally self identified as progressive, that is what the reviewers were likening us to. We don't try to cater to that, but we don't mind, and we certainly don’t try to cater to being commercial either. Call us what you want, but not everything we do classifies as a progressive song. It's probably more about the diversity of styles on each of our releases that gives us a progressive feel overall... The eternal heated debates by elitists over what is or isn’t progressive is one of the major factors fighting the universal exposure that genre needs to stay alive – it’s also a boring argument usually founded solely on subjective preferences… comments Whitman in a recent podcast interview, we don’t want to be stifled by a restrictive style label, but folks always ask what KIND of music is it that you play?– what else can one do to answer those inquiries but generalize?
Citadel's most recent audio releases, Vintage Vinyls, Regenerative Generation, At The Rainbow's End, The Citadel Star Tracks, and others are available by going to CDBaby.com or through the Official Citadel (tm) Sites (citadelsongs.com, citadelband.com, citadelmusic.org), where you'll find a downloadable order form, MP3 and video samples & downloads, lyrics, photos, links...
Now based on the West Coast, Citadel is always changing members around founder, Douglass/Whitman. The next CD will be available in 2007 featuring all new and previously unreleased songs, kinda like Seals and Crofts meets Metallica with a little Shadowfax and Steppenwolf thrown in for grace and growl Whitman concludes, this one will be followed by a filmed concert in the mountains and several appearances at fairs and festivals.
